Mickle Hill retiremnt living village staff celebrate their outstanding inspection report

Great community links, treating people as partners in their care and a service which is ‘exceptionally well-led’ all contributed to Mickle Hill retirement community in Pickering being awarded the top rating in an inspection of the care services provided for residents.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission declared the service provided by Methodist Homes (MHA) to be ‘outstanding’ when they visited in December 2019 and have just published their findings.

Mickle Hill is MHA’s first housing with care service to be rated as ‘outstanding’.

Mickle Hill is a purpose-built retirement village by Rangeford in association with MHA, which runs the site and provides personal care in people’s homes if and when they need it.

CQC inspectors looked at the care offered to residents and said: “People’s care was highly personalised and considerate to their needs. Activities and support were very varied and reflected the interests and passions of people. People’s needs were central to the Mickle Hill village and the wider local community.”

In addition, they highlighted how:

  • the service was exceptionally well-led by housing with care manager Gillian Green
  • residents and their relatives were unreserved in their praise and satisfaction of the service
  • the service had formed creative and robust links with the local community
  • people were compassionately supported at their end of life with appropriate involvement from health professionals and according to the person’s wishes
  • people were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible.

Manager Gillian Green said: “We are all delighted that the care and support we give to our residents has been officially noted as ‘outstanding’. All of us have our residents at the heart of what we do, whether it is providing care for them or organising activities for the village.”

Dan Ryan, MHA’s Director of Operations, said: “Gillian and the team at Mickle Hill should be rightly proud of what they have achieved in becoming our first housing with care service to be officially classed as ‘outstanding’.”

Howard Nankivell, CEO of Rangeford Villages comments: ‘Achieving an outstanding CQC rating is a terrific achievement. The onsite care service forms a critical part of the continued success of Mickle Hill and remains a key selling point for many of the residents that move into the village. I congratulate Gillian and the team and their rating is well deserved.’

On Thursday 30 September 2021, MHA’s management of Mickle Hill Retirement Living scheme in Pickering was transferred to Rangeford Villages.
