volunteer at a Live at Home scheme

Here at MHA, over 5,000 volunteers support us in providing vital services to older people all over the country. Without their time and support we wouldn’t be able to deliver these services to over 18,200 older people. So this Volunteers Week we are saying a huge ‘thank you’ to all our volunteers who really do make a huge difference to the lives of older people.

Volunteers Week is a nationwide annual campaign that recognises and celebrates the immense contribution that volunteers make to charities across the UK.

In the past year our 5,000 volunteers have given a huge amount of their own time to help support our members. Many of our volunteers have busy lives but make time to support us in our mission to eliminate loneliness and prevent the social isolation of older people.

Our volunteers contribute in a variety of ways, for example, visiting an older person at home via our befriending service, helping out at our Live at Home Schemes by organising activities for the people we serve, driving members to appointments or on shopping trips or providing companionship and assistance in our care homes. They perform a variety of tasks but their help is invaluable. They demonstrate the best traits of the human race - care, compassion and patience.

Not only do they make it possible for older people to stay in their homes for longer, they also support our members’ and residents families and carers when they most need it. Their commitment underpins the work we do and helps us give our members and residents access to a variety of services all over the country, tailored to the needs of older people in the community.

Over the next week we’ll be sharing some truly inspiring volunteer stories. They truly are heroes to us and to the older people who they volunteer to support.

Simon Cook, Volunteering Manager, said: “I am amazed at the level of dedication and commitment our volunteers demonstrate and I never tire of hearing all of the lovely stories detailing the contributions of our volunteers – whether that be from our staff, our members or our members families. Some of our volunteers have been donating their time for decades and they are truly valued, not just by MHA but also by the members they serve.”
