MHA Waterside House celebrates Black History Month with traditional feast for residents

MHA Waterside House celebrated Black History Month with a traditional feast for residents.

The Wolverhampton home prepared and bought some traditional Jamaican food to educate residents and staff on Black History Month.

There was also a speech from Dawn Ellis, the chaplain for the home who spoke about the importance of Black History Month and why it is celebrated.

Black History Month is an annual observance, throughout the month of October, originating in the United States, where it is also known as African American History Month.  

The home provides care for up to 60 people living with dementia.

Michelle Jones, activity coordinator said: “It's an annual thing we do at the home and it's something that is always well received.

“Wolverhampton is a very diverse town, and we are blessed to have that reflected in our workforce.

“The theme for this year was “Saluting our Sisters”, focusing on Black women who have made a difference throughout history.

“We spoke about how influential these women were and the residents found it very informative

“The residents then shared their own experiences of friends and neighbours who were black.

“Some of the food was prepared in house by our kitchen team and others were bought from an authentic restaurant.

“The family members of residents were very impressed and were very happy they chose the right day and really enjoyed the food.”
