The soaring cost of living makes it more important than ever to ensure your money stretches as far as possible. Thankfully, there are a lot of discounts available for older people. We've compiled the below list to help you.

Help on the high street

Some shops and supermarkets offer special discounts for older people. It's worth checking when you're at the checkout if the store offers any discounts. Here are just a few:

  1. Sainsbury’s ‘feed your family for a fiver’ - Sainsbury's have compiled meals that cost less than £5. 
  1. Iceland’s 10% off for over 60s - remember to take your ID as proof of age. 
  1. Poundland’s Value Heroes - get household essentials for just £1.

  2. Boots Advantage Card over 60s reward scheme - If you have a Boots Advantage Card and are 60 or over, you can claim extra discounts. You'll receive 8 points for every £1 you spend on Boots own-brand products and selected other products. There is exclusive events and discounts you'll also save 25% on your first pair of glasses or prescription sunglasses.

Eating out 

Check with your local pubs and restaurants as they often offer discounted lunches on certain days of the week or they may have a special seniors menu. Here's some examples:

  • Greene King Pubs – Senior menus are offered at reduced prices
  • Hungry Horse – Golden Years menus are available to over 60s, entitling diners to two courses for around £4.
  • Tastecard – for just £1 you can receieve a Tastecard which gives you 50% off food for two-for-one meals at more than 6,000 UK restaurants. 

Discounted cinema trips

Going to the cinema has become more expensive over time, however, some cinemas are now providing discounts for older people. Odeon has the Silver Cinema Club which offers discounts for over-60s, with tickets costing as little as £3.50 across the country. As a bonus, you'll also receive tea, coffee, and biscuits before the movie starts.

Other national cinema chains offer similar schemes, including 
Empire and Picturehouse. 

Cineworld have a senior ticket option, but they are also part of the Meerkat Movies scheme (2 for 1 cinema tickets available if you use Compare the Market insurance comparison site).

Showcase cinemas also have a senior ticket option and on a Monday show a Silver Screening for £5. Showcase are also part of the Meerkat Movies offer.  

Gym memberships

There are discounts available for over 60s at most gyms across the UK. Some gyms will offer an 'off-peak' membership ideal for people who are retired and can access the gym at quieter times. Speak to one of your local gyms or visit their website to see what they offer.

Total Fitness has an over 65 membership. 

Better Health offer a senior membership for people who are 66 and over, valid at various gyms across the UK.  

Everyone Active is another leading gym operator that offers a senior membership, aimed at those over 60, providing access to all of their facilities and classes.

Village Health & Wellness offer different membership packages that also include discounts on food and overnight stays. 

Discounts on vet bills

Ask your local vets to see if there are any discounts for over 60s. One way you can save money as a pet owner is with Dog Trust, who offer 50% off their membership for over 60s. This includes unlimited access to 24 hours emergency advice, 3rd party public liability insurance, and a card that guarantees Dog Trust will take care of your dog should you pass away.

Free prescriptions

If you're over 60, any medicine prescribed by a doctor is free anywhere in the UK. To get your free prescriptions, make sure you tell the chemist. You might have to show proof of age. 

Specsavers discounts

Specsavers offer 20% off glasses and lenses if you're over 60. The only condition is that your glasses of choice are from the £69 range or above. Your glasses will include a scratch-resistant lens treatment as standard. What's more, you may be eligible for a free NHS-funded eye test. See the Specsavers website for more information about who qualifies.

Cheaper haircuts

A lot of hairdressers offer a discount, which will vary across the UK. Ask your local hairdressers to see if they offer an older people's discount. 

Trips out

Football clubs

Across the country offer concession ticket prices for older people. The age limit will vary at each club so it's worth checking out prices on your favourite team's official website. Some clubs may even offer special senior prices throughout the season. There might also be discounts for over-60s on food and drink at your local stadium.

Gardens, museums and attractions

Majority of museums, theatres, art galleries and other attractions offer a senior discount so make sure you ask when booking or purchasing any tickets. 

The National Trust’s senior membership offers over-60s who have been a member of the organisation for at least five out of the last 10 years a 25% discount off adult rates. 

English Heritage offers reduced-price senior membership for people over 65 or a joint membership. This gives you access to more than 400 historic sites, free entry for up to six children, and free or reduced entry to events.

Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) offer a senior lifetime membership so you can enjoy unlimited free days out to RHS Gardens, priority access to events and exclusive reduced rate tickets to RHS flower shows and so much more.
