What makes Alexandra House special?
We work hard to provide the right balance of privacy and company for each individual; residents can be sure of quality and choice in their care, ensuring they can live life to the full in the way they wish.
Respite care at Alexandra House
Respite care, also known as short-term or short-stay care, is a temporary living arrangement at a care home. It gives both carers, and those being cared for, a bit of time off and a chance to recharge their batteries.
At Alexandra House, we offer residential and dementia respite care. Everyone staying with us for a respite break will receive personalised care, tailored to their individual needs. They’ll have their own furnished room and be encouraged to take part in the life of our home and the many activities on offer.
Where are we?
We’re right on the seafront on Marine Parade in the centre of Dovercourt Bay, with panoramic sea views. We’re situated in beautiful grounds, adjacent to Alexandra Court retirement living apartments. The local library, shops and restaurants are right on our doorstep. And our convenient location benefits from excellent transport links with a bus stop outside and the train station just two minutes away.
Award-winning music therapy
Our care home in Dovercourt Bay is committed to providing alternative therapies such as music therapy to help alleviate isolation and the symptoms for those living with dementia. Our trained and award-winning therapist is funded by charitable donations. They interact directly with residents through live music therapy sessions. This includes singing, playing simple percussion instruments or responding to musical cues in a one-to-one or group setting. Take a look at our video to find out more about this life-changing therapy.
Chaplaincy and pastoral support
We’re proud to be supported by a dedicated Chaplain at Alexandra House, who offers pastoral support to all, whatever their beliefs. The Chaplain is with us three days a week, providing a listening presence, companionship and one-to-one pastoral support for all residents, their friends and relatives, and staff members - irrespective of their beliefs.
Activities, trips and events
Our passionate Activity Coordinator keeps our residents active and entertained with a fun-packed calendar. We focus on enabling personal fulfilment for each individual and supporting each person’s choices, interests and hobbies
Activities include: film afternoons, knit and knatter, baking, reflexology, gardening, pamper sessions, whist, quiz nights, bingo, arts and crafts, flower arranging, exercise sessions, bible studies and personal support from our Chaplain who is employed at Alexandra House.
Periodically, we invite special guests and external entertainers into our home. The most popular is regular visitor Wanda, a gorgeous therapy dog.
We regularly go on local trips, making the most of our beautiful seafront setting, with a visit to the promenade and park, out for an ice-cream or trip to the local beer garden. Our residents let us know what they want to do, and we do our best to make it happen for them.

In many ways it is like living in a luxury hotel, where you don’t need to worry about laundry, changing the bed or cleaning your room. We will use the district nurse and GPs to provide any medical care. Our caring staff help with everyday activities like bathing and dressing and support at meal times.
At the same time, we’ll support you to maintain links with the local community, or develop new friendships. Care staff will help you do that, while also working hard to create a home that’s full of opportunity and possibility.
In the main living areas of the home you will find lounges where you can join in one of the many activities with others or sit quietly with a book or newspaper.
