International Nurses Day - 12 May

MHA wants to say ‘thank you’ for the contribution that each MHA nurse makes as we celebrate International Nurses Day on 12 May. Nursing is a highly skilled, safety critical profession. You are leaders, and we want to recognise the difference that you make to so many people’s lives each day. International Nurses Day is recognised on the anniversary of Florence Nightingales birth each year by the International Council of Nurses.

There is a new theme each year and this year it is:

Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care.

At MHA we are thankful for the essential role that you, as nurses, play in supporting people to live later life well in MHA nursing homes. They are experts in delivering healthcare within social care environments. We acknowledge your commitment, compassion, and leadership.

We are so pleased to say, as part of our Nursing Strategy, we are attracting more and more nurses to work for MHA, and we asked some of our nursing workforce the reason why they first decided to apply to work for MHA and why they have decided to stay. We were told:

In describing their career to date, MHA nurses said:

"I have learnt so much, met so many inspiring, caring people and enjoy the variety that my job brings.

I feel I have really grown and developed as a nurse since joining MHA."

One MHA nurse was asked to describe a highlight of working for the Charity. She said:

"There are many highlights, but for me it is whenever I am able to help in any way. Just to make someone’s life a little easier. In my role, I get to do this often."

Another MHA nurse said: "Profit isn’t the driver for MHA, there is more of a human focus and MHA values guide us all to keep that at the forefront of everything we do."

We also asked our nurses what they would say to other nurses who might be thinking of joining MHA. They said:

In recognition of the value of our nursing colleagues, we want people to identify talented nurses who go the extra mile in delivering excellent nursing care to the people who we support, and to take time to nominate them for a special national award.

Deborah Sturdy, Chief Nursing Officer for Adult Social Care, has developed a gold and silver award. Outstanding nurses or nurse-led teams can be nominated for this award at any time. This is a way to shine a light on individual excellence as a way of saying thank you for delivering the highest standards of care and inspiring others to do the same.

Do you know a nurse who goes above and beyond? You can nominate them today.
