About The Dovecotes
Adjacent to Allesley Hall care home, within the grounds of Allesley Park is The Dovecotes, a community of 39 retirement living apartments. The two-bed apartments are split over two levels, and benefit from the beautiful surrounding gardens and good access to local amenities.
The Dovecotes is a beautiful building, established in 1910 by William Isaac Iliffe (founder of the Coventry Evening Telegraph) and later extended in the 1980s.
The site's heritage dates back to the 12th century. Old records refer to a castle on a high knoll to the rear of Allesley Hall and in the 18th century, a walled garden was built in the surrounding Allesley Park.
Once part of the estate, it has now been renovated by volunteers to recreate a Georgian kitchen garden. Allesley Park opens to the public during the national Heritage Weekend when visitors can view the historic grounds, the garden’s rare trees – including an ancient yew reputed to be over 1,200 years old and the 18th century brick-built dovecote (once housing over 500 birds) from which the The Dovecotes takes its name.
