MHA Cedar Lodge has been celebrating South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) by getting residents to try mandala art.

The home has been celebrating SAHM, educating staff and residents about the significance of the diverse heritage and history from the countries in South Asia.

SAHM is celebrated between 18 July and 17 August and is marked to commemorate and celebrate the countries that continue to link the UK to South Asia.

The home provides residential, nursing and residential dementia care for 47 residents and activity coordinator Anne Hemming has been getting residents to try their hand at mandala art.

In the ancient Sanskrit language of Hinduism and Buddhism, mandala means “circle.”

Traditionally, a mandala is a geometric design or pattern that represents the cosmos or deities in various heavenly worlds.

Speaking about SAHM Anne said: “Initially we did a quiz on countries in South Asia, which was very educational and then we printed a map and identified the flags of the countries in South Asia.

“The mandala art sessions have been very positive, residents have really enjoyed them and find them very relaxing.

“You will often see them comparing each other's designs and looking to see how they are doing.

The art sessions have been very successful, learning about SAHM has been very enjoyable not only for the residents but for me as well and I am very happy with how we have celebrated SAHM at MHA Cedar Lodge."
