Pillars of our community - underpinning the great work of our schemes are the many hard working volunteers who give up their time and energy to support our members.

As local schemes, we foster mutually beneficial and rewarding relationships between older people and their communities. We explore the strengths, skills and experiences of all of our volunteers to understand how these can benefit the lives of the older people we serve as well as developing the talents of those who support Live at Home.

Not only is volunteering important for our personal emotional and physical wellbeing, it is also vital to the success and accessibility of Live at Home. Additionally, volunteering is an excellent asset for a CV and we support work-seeking volunteers by offering training courses and providing references and mentoring.

"I started as a volunteer and now I’m the Manager - how’s that for progression! The more I volunteered, the better I felt,” Rachel said. “Since I started volunteering at Shifnal, I feel like I’ve started a new life. It encouraged me, it gave me a new lease of life, and I just got more and more inspiration to keep going. I felt useful for the first time in my life." - Rachel Powell, Scheme Manager at Shifnal Live at Home

Live at Home schemes have partnerships with schools for inter-generational projects and encouraging young people to get involved in social action. Students are often mentored by staff, and some schemes are involved in time banking as well as other community initiatives.
