Statement: CEO Response to the Care Quality Commission’s Annual State of Care Report

Today, 22 October 2021, the Care Quality Commission released its annual State of Care report - an annual assessment of health care and social care in England. The report outlines trends, shares examples of good and outstanding care, and highlights where care needs to improve.

Our CEO Sam Monaghan said: “The conclusions of the CQC’s report very much echo what MHA has been saying for a while.

“Adult social care needs investment and reform. Its staff need the recognition they deserve and action is needed immediately to prevent the staffing crisis across the sector from deepening, with older people unable to access the support and care they need and deserve.

“Our care staff are doing a remarkable job, and have done right from the start of the pandemic. They deserve better.

“We need the Government to take immediate action to enable more people from overseas to work in UK care, to fund a bonus as they have in Scotland and Wales to acknowledge the dedication of care workers through the pandemic, and to drive a national recruitment programme.

“If we don’t get action, more of our homes will have to close to new admissions to make sure we continue to operate safely as this is something we will not compromise on. This has the knock-on effect on the NHS, which is unable to discharge people who are medically fit but need care and support.”
