Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Below is some additional information and FAQs about volunteering for MHA at this time.

Who are MHA and what do you do?

We are a national charity that enables people to live later life well. Across our 89 specialist care homes, 69 retirement living sites and 45 community groups, we put people at the heart of everything we do and look after over 18,000 older people up and down the country.

Amid the Coronavirus outbreak, we are working tirelessly to protect and care for some of the most vulnerable to this illness and ensure we’re doing everything we can to support our residents, members, relatives, volunteers and colleagues.

Our values of respect, nurture and inspire have never been more important and we are proud of all our 7000+ colleagues and 4,000+ volunteers for their dedication and commitment for the people we care for. For more about MHA and our services, visit our About Us page >>

I want to volunteer, what will I be doing?

Great news, we really appreciate your commitment. We have a variety of roles we are currently recruiting for across our services, listed above. Please click on the ‘more info’ for a full role description.

I’ve chosen a role(s), how do I apply?

Once you’ve found a role(s) to suit you, simply complete the online form at the bottom of this page, outlining which volunteer role you’d like to apply for. If you’d like to sign up for more than one role, please just tick all the roles you would like to be considered for.

One of our services in your area will then be in touch about how you can support and coordinate times to suit you.

How much time will I be required to commit?

All our roles are flexible, and will be allocated based on your availability, the need of services in your area and of course we are providing a safe environment for you at this time.

Upon being accepted as a volunteer, you may not be deployed immediately, but be called upon dependent on local need at any given time. We will always try and keep you allocated to the role you have applied for, and if we do ask you to do something else this is of course your choice.

How are you protecting your volunteers at this time?

Our volunteers are extremely important to us and their health and wellbeing is top of our agenda. We advise that our volunteers who are 70 and over and/or have underlying health conditions follow government advice and isolate at home.

All volunteers coming in to MHA at this time will have all of the protective equipment they need for their roles and full instruction in infection control and good hygiene. In addition, all volunteers will have a named contact of someone to talk to if they are experiencing any difficulties. We recognise that the current situation can place an emotional burden on volunteers so we will ensure you are supported.

We will be honest and open about Covid-19 infections to allow volunteers to make informed choices about their volunteering roles and accept and support decisions volunteers make in their own best interests.

Will I need training?

Full training and induction will be provided (unless you can’t drive!)

Will I receive expenses?

All out of pocket expenses will be paid.

Do you have any paid roles?

Yes, absolutely! We have a range of vacancies for employed roles. For more information on these roles and working for MHA, please go to our careers section >>
