We need people to help out in our care home and retirement community gardens, creating a safe and calming environment for residents.

Do you have a green thumb and a passion for gardening? Do you want to share your skills and enthusiasm with older people in your community? If so, you might be interested in becoming a volunteer gardener for MHA.

As a volunteer gardener, you will help maintain and improve the gardens of our care homes and/or retirement living schemes across England and Wales. You will also assist our residents and members to enjoy the benefits of nature and gardening, such as improved physical and mental health, social interaction, and creativity.

By volunteering as a gardener, you will not only help create beautiful and therapeutic outdoor spaces for older people, but also enrich your own life with new experiences and friendships. You will also gain valuable skills and knowledge that can enhance your personal and professional development.

What is the role of a volunteer gardener?

How do I apply to become a volunteer gardener? 

You can apply online by filling out a short application form. You will also need to complete a DBS check and attend an induction training session before you start your role. Our Volunteering Team will guide you through the application prcoess and be on-hand to answer any questions you may have.

How much time do I need to commit as a volunteer gardener? 

The time commitment varies depending on the needs of the MHA location you are matched with and your availability. Generally, we ask for a minimum of one hour per week for at least six months.

What kind of support will I receive as a volunteer gardener? 

You will receive ongoing support and guidance from a local coordinator who will match you with an MHA location, monitor your progress, and provide feedback. You will also have access to online resources, training opportunities, and peer support from other volunteers.
