Celebrating the wisdom
of our older people

With a lifetime of experience, older people have a wealth of knowledge that we can all benefit from. We’ve asked people living in our care homes, retirement living and community support services for their Words of Wisdom and life lessons by asking:

“Knowing what you know now, having lived such a full and rich life, what advice would you give to your younger self?”

Their heartwarming guidance will feature on our website as well as our Instagram and Twitter. The campaign launches on 20 January 2020, as an antidote to Blue Monday - the day deemed to be the most depressing of the year, where we are encouraging people to acknowledge and value the wisdom gained with age.

How you can get involved...

We are asking you to pledge to speak with an older person to understand their words of wisdom.

To join in with our 2020 campaign, ask an older person “knowing what you know now, having lived such a full and rich life, what advice would you give to your younger self?” Also, why not ask for some life lessons to guide you through the next decade and beyond.

Radio and television presenter Gloria Hunniford OBE, who supports the MHA Words of Wisdom campaign, says:

"Even small acts like having a chat and a cuppa with a neighbour who is older, can have a huge impact on strengthening bonds. That’s why I’m supporting MHA’s commendable Words of Wisdom campaign.

"It aims to bridge the gap between young people and older generations and inspire greater communication. Only then can younger generations receive the nuggets of wisdom from older generations that will help them live fulfilling lives.

"I applaud MHA for running this campaign and giving a voice to older people, particularly in care settings who so often are not heard.”

Follow MHA on Instagram @mhacharity and Twitter @yourMHA and take part in the campaign by sharing your stories and words of wisdom using #WordsOfWisdom.
