At MHA Communities Portsmouth and Havant, we want to enable older people to maintain their independence and live more fulfilled lives.

Through befriending, clubs in the community, one to one walks and much more, MHA's Portsmouth & Havant schemes across the UK help to tackle loneliness and isolation in people over 60 – helping them to lead fulfilled lives and remain as active members in their local communities.

Activities at Portsmouth and Havant scheme include:

  • Singing for Fun in Waterlooville Community Centre, Drayton Community Centre and Wellesley Court Retirement Apartments, Waterlooville.
  • Steady & Strong Exercise Group in Waterlooville Baptist Church and The Meridian Centre, Havant.
  • Telephone and One to One Befriending.
  • One to One Walks.
  • Pen pal Service.
  • Welfare Calls/Telephone Circles.
  • Digital Programme: A scheme that offers support to those who want to become more confident in accessing online services.
  • Online Activities.
  • Get Going Again Scheme: A scheme that helps people re-engage with their communities when they have lost confidence due to health or other issues.

The scheme's activities programme is designed and led by its members, volunteers and professional instructors to ensure that we are providing the practical and social support which those we serve need.

Information for businesses and corporates

MHA is able to subsidise many of its charitable services thanks to the generous contributions of businesses who want to make a difference in their local communities. How to get involved

Information for families and friends

If you’re looking at Portsmouth & Havant to help someone you know, we understand. With a busy work life, family and other responsibilities, sometimes it just isn’t possible to travel regularly and give a loved one the dedicated care and support you wish you could provide. Refer a family member or friend

Information for healthcare professionals

If an older person in hospital has no family, friends or neighbours, we can assist them to return home. We work with GP practices, hospital discharge and re-enablement teams and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) to support older people adjust and settle back at home after a period in hospital. Refer a patient

Information for local authorities

Through our preventative, person-centred services, we can reduce the strain on local health services – delaying, minimising or even preventing people’s need for them. More information

Volunteers needed

Can you offer your time to prevent people from feeling lonely and isolated? Maybe you're looking to become more involved with your local community?

If this sounds like you, we need your help!

We are offering you the opportunity to help older people in your community live later life well. We run weekly groups for people aged 55+ and are looking for Volunteers to get involved for a few hours a month, whenever it suits YOU!

Perhaps you’d like to contribute a couple of hours to fundraise? Maybe you’d like to take part in a leisurely walk with someone or make a new friend?

We know that your time is precious so we will work with you to make sure you get the most out of your experience with us. If you are a good communicator who shares our values of helping eliminate loneliness in older people, we’d love to hear from you!

Volunteer drivers to take some of our frail members to and from activities (and stay and join in if they wish, free of charge). Expenses Paid.

Social Volunteers: Welcome members to either of our Singing for Fun Group or our Steady and Strong Exercise group. These activities are for all abilities or no ability at all. It is more important that people have the opportunity to meet people in a social setting and make new friends whilst taking part in a shared activity. During the first or last 30 minutes, people have a chat over tea and biscuits.

Helping at these activities can mean arriving half an hour before the session starts, helping to put out chairs, welcoming members when they arrive, handing out leaflets of our other activities, introducing new members to one another, distributing tea and coffee, distributing song sheets, generally making people feel comfortable and helping to create a friendly atmosphere and helping to clear away afterwards, you can make a difference and have fun at the same time.

Befriending Volunteers: To visit people in their own homes for coffee and a chat, or to accompany them on a short walk from their home. Choose a time to suit you, whether it’s a few hours per week, fortnight or once a month, you can make a real difference to someone’s life and form lasting friendships.

Remote Volunteers: Want to volunteer from the comfort of your own home? You can make a real difference to someone’s life by becoming a telephone befriender or taking part in our Penpal Serivce. You can help people feel connected to the outside world and make a friend at the same time…  all from the comfort of your living room!
