Services for older people in Harrogate

At MHA Communities Harrogate, we want to enable older people to maintain their independence and live more fulfilled lives.

Through befriending, lunch clubs, assisted shopping, activity and friendship sessions, outings, escorts to appointments and much more, MHA Communities schemes across the UK help to tackle loneliness and isolation in people over 55 – helping them to lead fulfilled lives and remain as active members in their local communities.

As a new scheme, MHA Communities Harrogate will initially offer members

  • one-to-one befriending by telephone and remotely via Zoom
  • support with getting online by Volunteer Digital Champions
  • access to our Digital Communities programme offering a variety of exciting and fun activities online suitable for people aged 55 and over.

Digital Communities provides a broad range of online videos and social activities such as baking, quizzes, gardening, religious services and fitness with many available 24 hours a day. These activities are organised from all of our community groups across the country, tailored to the needs of our members.

The Harrogate activities programme will be designed and led by its members and volunteers to ensure that we are providing the practical and social support which those we serve need.

Information for businesses and corporates

MHA is able to subsidise many of its charitable services thanks to the generous contributions of businesses who want to make a difference in their local communities. How to get involved

Information for families and friends

If you’re looking at MHA Communities to help someone you know, we understand. With a busy work life, family and other responsibilities, sometimes it just isn’t possible to travel regularly and give a loved one the dedicated care and support you wish you could provide. Refer a family member or friend

Information for healthcare professionals

If an older person in hospital has no family, friends or neighbours, we can assist them to return home. We work with GP practices, hospital discharge and re-enablement teams and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) to support older people adjust and settle back at home after a period in hospital. Refer a patient

Information for local authorities

Through our preventative, person-centred services, we can reduce the strain on local health services – delaying, minimising or even preventing people’s need for them. More information

Volunteers needed

Can you offer your time to prevent people from feeling lonely and isolated? Maybe you're looking to become more involved with your local community?

If this sounds like you, we need your help!

We are offering you the opportunity to help older people in your community live later life well. We run weekly activities for people aged 55+ and are looking for Volunteers to get involved for a few hours a month, whenever it suits YOU!

Perhaps you’d like to contribute a couple of hours to fundraise? Maybe you’d like to befriend an older person through weekly social phone calls or help them get online and access our digital activities?

We know that your time is precious so we will work with you to make sure you get the most out of your experience with us. From working directly with our members, to representing the scheme at local events, there are many aspects of the organisation you can choose to get involved with!

If you are a good communicator who shares our values of helping eliminate loneliness in older people, please get in touch.

We are currently looking to recruit for the following volunteer roles:

  • Befriending
  • Digital Champions (training provided)
  • Fundraising
