Shirley Church Road, Shirley, Croydon, CR9 5AL
Situated in beautiful grounds and located just three miles east of Croydon town centre in Shirley, Hall Grange offers residential and dementia care for up to 86 older people.
Each floor offers a spacious and well-furnished dining room and lounge for meals and socialising. There is also an activities room, a quiet sitting room and several meeting areas to allow families and their loved ones to relax in private.
We have an excellent local reputation: relatives and volunteers are very much involved in activities and events and decision-making on these is based on their input and personal interests.
We run daily activities involving the wider community such as baby and toddler group sessions which help stimulate residents living with dementia. Hall Grange residents benefit from unique access to MHA The Wilderness, a reclaimed and reformed garden and nature reserve.
What makes Hall Grange special?
Respite care at Hall Grange
Respite care, also known as short-term or short-stay care, is a temporary living arrangement at a care home. It gives both carers, and those being cared for, a bit of time off and a chance to recharge their batteries.
At Hall Grange, we offer residential and dementia respite care. Everyone staying with us for a respite break will receive personalised care, tailored to their individual needs. They’ll have their own furnished room and be encouraged to take part in the life of our home and the many activities on offer.
Award-winning music therapy
Our care home in Croydon is committed to providing alternative therapies such as music therapy to help alleviate isolation and the symptoms for those living with dementia. Our trained and award-winning therapist is funded by charitable donations. They interact directly with residents through live music therapy sessions. This includes singing, playing simple percussion instruments or responding to musical cues in a one-to-one or group setting. Take a look at our video to find out more about this life-changing therapy.
We have played host to BBC radio and TV presenter Lauren Laverne. Lauren is an ambassador for the Music for Dementia campaign and visited Hall Grange to see music therapy in action for herself. She took part in a one-to-one music therapy session with resident June and music therapist Clare Barone. Lauren also joined residents for a group music therapy session.
Chaplaincy and pastoral support
We are proud to be supported by a dedicated Chaplain at Hall Grange, who offers pastoral support to all, whatever their beliefs. Our Chaplain is in the home three days a week, providing a listening presence, companionship and one-to-one pastoral support for all residents, their friends and relatives, and staff members - irrespective of their beliefs - and organise worship for those who wish to participate. Where appropriate, residents are encouraged to maintain links with local faith communities.
Activities, trips and events
We support everybody’s individual choices, interests and hobbies and our passionate Activity Coordinators love keeping residents active and entertained. They provide a fun-packed and stimulating schedule for people to participate in as they choose.
There’s our choir, armchair exercise sessions, baking, flower arranging, arts and crafts, quizzes, bingo, external entertainers and church services, just to mention a few of the things we get up to.
The Wilderness
Hall Grange has beautiful gardens and its very own Wilderness. MHA The Wilderness is a seven-acre site at the back of Hall Grange which is being brought back to life for residents and the local community to enjoy. The garden was established at the turn of the 20th century by the Rev William Wilks, former vicar at Shirley and secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society. He was the creator of the Shirley poppy, now the official emblem of Croydon borough.
Hall Grange residents – some of whom remember The Wilderness from their early years – enjoy being involved in green activities such as planting and helping to create homes for wildlife.
Seize the day – making unique and memorable opportunities
Funded through charitable support, every MHA care home also prides itself in being able to offer unique and memorable opportunities and activities for residents to quite literally help them 'seize the day'.

MHA is a pioneer of person-centred dementia care in the UK.
With a reputation for providing the highest quality care, our person-centred care recognises each person as a unique individual and addresses their own spiritual and physical needs, with both reassurance and support.
Focusing on individual needs and support for older people, we make sure that we help our residents live later life well, aiming to alleviate the symptoms of dementia with understanding and expertise.
Everyone with dementia is different. At Hall Grange, we take time to get to know each individual’s history, personality and preferences, and find ways to make every day fulfilling.
Our dementia area at Hall Grange is designed to be safe for you, and also as familiar, reassuring and as easy to navigate as possible. The dementia floor is secured by keypad coding to ensure that you are safe and secure at all times.
Residential care
Finding a place that you can call "home" is a question of getting the right balance.
Our residential care provides 24 hour support to help residents maintain independence –giving you peace of mind and a place to make new friends and explore new interests.
In many ways it is like living in a hotel, where you don’t need to worry about laundry, changing the bed or cleaning your room. We will use the district nurse and GPs to provide any medical care. Our caring staff help with everyday activities like bathing and dressing and support at meal times.
At the same time, there is no reason why you can’t maintain links with the local community, or develop new friendships and relationships. Care staff will help you do that, while also working hard to create a home that is itself full of opportunity and possibility.
In the main living areas of the home you will find lounges where you can join in one of the many activities with others or to sit quietly with a book or newspaper.
Food and drink
Meal times are a special part of the day for you to savour tasty food, freshly cooked by our chef to suit you and any dietary needs. And, of course refreshments are available throughout the day for you and your visitors, who are welcome at any time.
"The catering staff provide an excellent standard of food under the head chef who has a real pride in his job." Relative review on carehome.co.uk
