At Lower Johnshill in Auchlochan, which has recently undergone a £330,000 refurbishment, the key word is “home”.

“We are the residents’ home,” says Manager Margo Brunton. “So we’re friendly, welcoming and like a large family. It’s where residents live, so they should be able to do the things they enjoy.”

The rooms come in three sizes (standard, deluxe and turret), and all are en suite with small private kitchens. “We make sure residents have their own tea, coffee, milk, sugar, bread and biscuits,” Margo adds. “So they can decide where to have breakfast, or take their guests to their rooms for refreshments.”

The lounges and garden are safe for people with dementia to enjoy, and those who like gardening are welcome to tend the flowerbeds. Three Social Care Facilitators work together to produce an activity programme of quizzes, arts, crafts, music and singsongs, as well as three fetes a year. “Residents do love a pantomime,” laughs Margo. “They’re not just for Christmas!” Outings, too, are based around where residents themselves wish to go, such as heritage centres, the seaside and places for cream teas.

Food is freshly prepared on site every day, to all dietary needs and preferences – including the same desserts for diabetic residents, only without sugar.

And of course, from every window there is a beautiful view – of lochs, wildlife and the green of the adjoining Hollandbush golf course.

We are committed to providing alternative therapies such as reflexology and music therapy, which does much to help promote the well-being of each individual, while our Chaplain offers pastoral support to all at Lower Johnshill, whatever their beliefs.

Funded through charitable support, every MHA care home also prides itself in being able to offer unique and memorable opportunities and activities for residents to quite literally help them seize the day

Therapy comes in many forms at Lower Johnshill. All elements of life are geared towards getting the best out of every day for each resident.

The range of care available gives people peace of mind that they will not need to move if their requirements change. Staff are trained and dedicated, and the domestic and laundry services are highly efficient.

To keep surroundings familiar and reassuring for people with dementia, the same staff members are kept on the dementia care team as much as possible. They also stay up to date with specialist training. Residents have their own memory boxes outside their bedroom doors, and textured walls offer a sensory experience.

Music therapy gives people with dementia a way to express themselves, and animal lovers get great joy from the therapy dogs who visit regularly. Staff sometimes bring their own pets in too.

Reminiscence also features strongly in the activity programme, with benefits to all residents and particularly therapeutic for those with dementia.
