Where are we?

Lower Johnshill is situated within the grounds of Auchlochan Garden Village just two miles outside the village of Lesmahagow in Lanarkshire. The home benefits from the rural surroundings of a 50 acre parkland estate and yet is only five miles from junction nine of the M74 motorway, with Glasgow reached in around 30 /40 minutes by car.

Explore new activities surrounded by Lanarkshire countryside

For those who enjoy the outdoors, our landscaped gardens are surrounded by stunning Lanarkshire countryside and wildlife, and there’s also a sensory garden.

Our hair salon is perfect for a spot of spot of pampering. We’ve a schedule of optional events and activities, helping residents to explore their interests and discover new ones. Along with animal visits, there’s armchair exercises, themed events, gardening, baking, flower arranging, arts and crafts, quizzes and church services. We also have a dedicated chaplain and offer music therapy for our residents living with dementia.

We also have our own minibus and enjoy trips to the seaside, to heritage centres, or for cream teas. Together with visits from local schools and nurseries and regular entertainers, there’s really never a dull moment. The home offers a busy and varied events calendar covering all areas of the care home, the pet rabbit Fluffy is a welcome part of the team and the recently added Post Office and Sweet Shop mural spaces are a nice trip down memory lane.

From a support point of view, the home has a GP visit every Monday, the local dentist and opticians make home visits and a chaplain is available three days a week. Music therapy and a Tovertafel (Magic Table) are available for dementia interaction. On-site is a part-time hairdresser and beautician, great for a spot of pampering, as well as a monthly visiting chiropodist, bus trips every other week and in the nicer weather, there is a secured garden for sitting and admiring the view.

Award winning music therapy

MHA is a leading provider of music therapy in dementia care across the UK.

Funded entirely by charitable donations, these award-winning weekly sessions are led by our highly-trained therapists and can have an incredibly powerful and positive impact on a person’s wellbeing.

At Lower Johnshill, our music therapists interact with residents through singalongs, playing simple percussion
instruments and responding to musical cues in either a one-to-one or group setting. These sessions often prove to be truly life-enhancing, helping people to unlock special memories and express their feelings and emotions.

Take a look at our video to find out more about this life changing therapy.

Chaplaincy and pastoral support

Lower Johnshill is proud to be supported by a dedicated Chaplain who offers pastoral support to all, whatever their beliefs. The chaplain provides a listening presence, companionship and one-to-one pastoral support for all residents, their friends and relatives, and staff members - irrespective of their beliefs - and organise worship for those who wish to participate. Where appropriate, residents are encouraged to maintain links with local faith communities.

Seize the day

Funded through charitable support, every MHA care home also prides itself in being able to offer unique and memorable opportunities and activities for residents to quite literally help them 'seize the day'.

Privacy and independence, friendship and support - 24 hours a day

Lower Johnshill offers care and comfort, compassion and friendship. At the heart of all we offer is our assurance that you will be treated with the respect and dignity that we all deserve, and if you need anything at all, we’re here to help, 24 hours a day.

Whether in the privacy of your own room or relaxing in the company of your friends and neighbours, we will support you to spend your time doing the things you enjoy. Let us know if it’s music, a favourite newspaper, exercise or a spot of pampering at the salon. Landscaped gardens invite you to appreciate the fresh air, or tend the plants, if you wish. There’s a wide range of social events, so you never need to feel bored or lonely.

Lower Johnshill has the latest safety and security design features so you can live life to the full with peace of mind.

Your room

All of the rooms are spacious and the residential care rooms have a galley-style kitchenette with space for preparing drinks, a fridge and storage space. Note that this space is not set up for cooking but some residents have a microwave, which is useful when relatives bring takeaways on their visits.

The rooms vary in type and range, with views from garden to lochan. Some rooms have turrets and all have generous sized windows and good outlooks over the Auchlochan grounds.

Residential care

Our residential care is all about providing a special kind of home from home. It’s our way of making sure your loved one continues to live life to its fullest and remains as independent as possible. It means they can get out and about when they want to, catch up with friends or pop to the shops, but with the added security and peace of mind that comes from knowing 24-hour support is available if they need it.

Our team are on hand to offer just the right amount of care, giving those who need it support with activities such as bathing, dressing and mealtimes. Without having to worry about cooking meals, washing clothes or getting the hoover out, you’ll see your loved one truly enjoying life and exploring their full potential.

Nursing care

24-hour nursing care, tailored for individual needs. We provide round the clock specialist nursing care for those with medical needs, whether that’s a long-term illness or disability. Medical and other forms of specialist support are delivered with friendly expertise by our highly skilled team of nursing professionals.

As you’d expect from our wonderfully compassionate team, nursing care is wholly person-centred to meet the
requirements of each individual with respect and dignity at all times.

Residential dementia and nursing dementia care

We’re proud to be recognised for our pioneering approach to dementia care. Our dementia facilities are specially designed to provide a reassuringly familiar, engaging and warm environment for those living with us. We have dementia friendly decor and memory boxes to assist your loved one to find their room.

We’ve themed areas including a shop and our dementia areas open into a secure sensory garden. Residents enjoy music therapy and reminiscence activities, including doll therapy, designed to stimulate social interaction and alleviate isolation.

Residents living with dementia who require nursing care, benefit from our 24-hour specialist nursing care, delivered with an expert sensitivity to the symptoms of dementia.

Food and drink

Mealtimes are an important part of the day here, giving our residents the opportunity to get together and enjoy freshly prepared food in a relaxed restaurant-style environment. We always offer two meal options and our chefs will happily prepare something special if nothing on the menu appeals.

Sample menu

Lunch: Vegetable and potato broth or prawn cocktail sandwich followed by fruit flan or chocolate fudge cake

Dinner: Braised steak or egg & bacon salad followed by chocolate sponge or eton mess
