What makes Elmside special?
Respite care at Elmside
Respite care, also known as short-term or short-stay care, is a temporary living arrangement at a care home. It gives both carers, and those being cared for, a bit of time off and a chance to recharge their batteries.
At Elmside, we offer residential and dementia respite care. Everyone staying with us for a respite break will receive personalised care, tailored to their individual needs. They’ll have their own furnished room and be encouraged to take part in the life of our home and the many activities on offer.
Where are we?
We’re in a quiet residential area in Hitchin and only a mile away from the historic town centre and train station. Elmside is well served by public transport and has a variety of amenities within walking distance including a swimming pool, local supermarkets, independent cafes, restaurants, shops and pubs. The home is located 4.5 miles from the A1 and just 10 miles from the M1.
The plot of land that Elmside is built on was sold to MHA by the local Moss family, well-known in Hitchin for their grocery stores. The Moss family home was replaced by a completely new two-storey building, together with an adjacent retirement living with care community, Archers Court Retirement Living apartments.
Award-winning music therapy
Our Care Home in Hitchin is committed to providing alternative therapies such as music therapy to help alleviate isolation and the symptoms for those living with dementia. Our trained therapist is funded by charitable donations. She spends a day each week at the home and interacts directly with residents through live music therapy sessions. This includes singing, playing simple percussion instruments or responding to musical cues in a one-to-one or group setting. Take a look at our video to find out more about this life-changing therapy.
Chaplaincy and pastoral care
We are proud to be supported by a dedicated Chaplain at Elmside, who offers pastoral support to all, whatever their beliefs.
Our Chaplain is in the home two days a week, providing a listening presence, companionship and one-to-one pastoral support for all residents, their friends and relatives, and staff members – irrespective of their beliefs – and organise worship for those who wish to participate. Where appropriate, residents are encouraged to maintain links with local faith communities.
Activities, trips and events
Our beautifully landscaped gardens and patios are lovely areas to relax and enjoy the sunshine. There’s also a chapel, a hair salon for a spot of pampering and our reminiscence room offers a familiar quiet place. And our coffee shop is the perfect place to get together with friends.
We have a schedule of events and optional activities, helping residents to explore their interests and discover new ones. There’s music therapy for our residents living with dementia, armchair exercises, gardening, baking, flower arranging, arts and crafts, bingo, quizzes, bible studies and church services. We also have a dedicated chaplain.
We often invite local entertainment in and our residents look forward to visits from the local nursery and pre-school. We also enjoy popular theme nights and regular day trips out.
Seize the day – unique and memorable opportunities
Funded through charitable support, every MHA care home also prides itself in being able to offer unique and memorable opportunities and activities for residents to quite literally help them 'seize the day'.

Elmside has the latest safety and security design features so you can live life to the full with peace of mind.
Our residential care is all about providing a special kind of home from home. It’s our way of making sure your loved one continues to live life to its fullest and remains as independent as possible. It means they can get out and about when they want to, catch up with friends or pop to the shops, but with the added security and peace of mind that comes from knowing 24-hour support is available if they need it.
Our team are on hand to offer just the right amount of care, giving those who need it support with activities such as bathing, dressing and mealtimes.
Without having to worry about cooking meals, washing clothes or getting the hoover out, you’ll see your loved one truly enjoying life and exploring their full potential.
We’re proud to be recognised for our pioneering approach to dementia care, which is carefully built around each individual.
Our dementia facilities here are second to none, and specially designed to provide a reassuringly familiar, engaging and warm environment for those living with us. We have dementia friendly decor and bedroom doors have memory boxes to assist your loved one to find their room. Our dementia areas open into a secure and peaceful garden and we have dressing up areas around the home.
Residents enjoy music therapy and reminiscence activities, including doll therapy, designed to stimulate social interaction and alleviate the feeling of isolation associated with dementia.
We encourage our residents to furnish their own rooms as they wish. This could be as simple as hanging a couple of their favourite pictures on the wall, but they’re also welcome to bring their own comfy chair, or anything that makes them feel at home.
The most important thing is for everyone to feel comfortable, happy and settled. We have a choice of single rooms or specialist care suites designed for couples, enabling their differing care needs to be met. All our bedrooms have a full en suite wet room, with toilet and sink, and some rooms enjoy lovely garden views.
If your loved one enjoys catching up with the latest news, sport, chat shows or soaps, there’s a TV in their room and we have WiFi throughout the home.
Mealtimes are an important part of the day here, giving our residents the opportunity to get together and enjoy freshly prepared food in a relaxed restaurant-style environment. We always offer two meal options and our chefs will happily prepare something special if nothing on the menu appeals.
