Our End of Life Care Strategy

We hope that our residents, members and their relatives will be able to approach their final years and days with a sense of acceptance, peace and fulfilment.

For many residents in our care homes, MHA will provide them with their last home. In retirement living and MHA communities, residents and members may be further from the end of their lives but as we age, many of us become more thoughtful about how and where we would like that end to be. That is why we have developed our End of Life Care Strategy, to set out our commitment to excellent care and how we plan to deliver it.

The strategy document is also available in a Welsh version >

In the development of the strategy, we asked residents, relatives and colleagues, what would be important to them in the way we care for those coming to the end of their lives. The four commitments in the strategy are the result of what they told us:

  • We will put you at the centre of your support and care, enabling you to make decisions as long as you are able, and ensuring comfort and peace at the end of your life.
  • We will ensure that death and dying can be talked about openly and sensitively in all our services and communications.
  • We will support your family and friends for as long as is needed, helping them to say goodbye and celebrate your life.
  • We will ensure that our colleagues and volunteers have the necessary attitudes, knowledge, skills and support to care for you.

A key part of our work so far has been the revision of The Final Lap – an award-winning programme designed to encourage a culture of openness and positivity throughout the organisation. Through this programme, all our colleagues will be trained to support residents, members, their families and one another, as we explore what the last days of life will mean for each person.

Through the implementation of this strategy, we hope that residents, members and their relatives will be able to approach their final years and days with a sense of acceptance, peace and fulfilment.
