Ferguson House was opened in 2003 within the grounds of MHA’s Stones Place Care Home, itself opened almost 30 years earlier. It was named after Margaret and Stuart Ferguson, a brother and sister from Lincoln who had left a generous legacy to MHA. The 16 new supported-retirement apartments were part of MHA’s planned response to the growing numbers of older people looking for supported accommodation to purchase. At the time, it was estimated that over five per cent of older people in the UK were already living in sheltered housing – a percentage set to grow.
Ferguson House was designed to combine privacy and independence, with no maintenance worries, and the reassurance of knowing that help and company was never far away.
Moving in to Ferguson House in the October of 2003, the reasons Mrs Arnold gave for choosing the complex were typical of many others. “My husband was no longer able to maintain our home and garden and it was becoming a worry for me, but the scenery is beautiful here and we chose the right time to move with the autumn trees. It is a big help to know that we’re not far away from the manager and it takes a lot of the maintenance and security worries away from me.”
