Maidment Court opened in 1972 and was named after the family that left land and resources to finance the Home. Maidment originally had capacity for 35 residents. An extension in 1998 and further refurbishment in 2002 has increased capacity to the current total of 46. It is a Home which boasts residents from a very wide variety of backgrounds – fire fighters and librarians, magistrates and ministers.
A former army Major, willing to share his experiences of the Second World War, has been a regular visitor to local secondary schools, all of which have been delighted with his living history accounts. A former missionary nurse, and matron of the hospital which she established in Papua New Guinea, has recently donated her remarkable collection of sea shells to London’s Natural History Museum where it is now on display. Other residents have written their memoirs and had them printed for friends and family.
Now, with the acquisition of a new computer, staff members are encouraging all residents to spend some time recording their memoirs and memories. As one resident said: “It’s no good having experiences if you don’t learn from them”.
