Maple Leaf House is a purpose-built Nursing Home for people with dementia, opened by MHA in 2003. It is located on the edge of Ripley, some 12 miles north of Derby by way of Denby and its famous pottery.
Maple Leaf House was built using a groundbreaking design based on contemporary research in how best to assist people with dementia. The Home is decorated in warm pastel shades with corridor carpets being one continuous colour and breaks are avoided to prevent confusion. The doors to bathrooms and toilets have signs so that the different facilities can be recognised and used. Communal areas are easily viewable in order to encourage entry and are designed to be reminiscent of domestic homes, helping to create a sense of familiarity and contentment.
Maple Leaf is also one of the Homes in which MHA has developed a sensory garden. Raised flower beds, plants and water features give opportunities to help create a sense of calm and to stimulate reminiscence through scents, touch and vision.
The kind of care offered by the Home is a growing requirement as society continues to age. Crucially, so far as Maple Leaf House is concerned, the Alzheimer’s Society predicts that the number of older people in the UK with dementia will reach 870,000 by 2010.
