Strategy

We are living in an ageing society, with rising dementia and care needs.  The government’s policy is to promote independence.  As one of the top 10 largest care providers and within the top 3 largest non-profit providers, MHA’s strategy to 2013 is to:

  • Maintain MHA values which are founded on love, compassion and respect
  • Provide a person-centred service to each older person
  • Encourage volunteers and supporters in making a real difference
  • Develop the role of chaplains who offer an enhanced service
  • Serve older people with and without their own resources
  • Work in partnership with others, offering housing and care expertise
  • Properly manage our significant growth to provide more services
  • Achieve appropriate surplus to continue our services into the future
  • Fundraise to subsidise and develop innovative projects to improve the quality of life for older people

Care Homes

  • Increase the number of care home places we offer
  • Improve the quality of some of our older buildings
  • Establish potential for extension, reconfiguration and improvement
  • Focus particularly on dementia care, modern residential care, partnerships and urban locations

Quality of Care

  • Promote well-being and fulfilment 
  • Develop dementia care
  • Develop End of Life care and spirituality
  • Offer attractive and well-designed homes and housing
  • Enhance quality assurance systems
  • Deliver consistently high standards of catering
  • Recruit and retain managers and staff with the right skills, experience and attitude
  • Housing and Housing with Care
  • Increase the number of Housing with Care places we offer
  • Establish potential for extension, reconfiguration and improvement
  • Offer cleaning, shopping, catering and care services at our housing
  • Develop plans for new housing with care schemes for sale, and for rent where grants are available
  • Focus particularly on dementia care, accommodation for couples, assistive technology, partnerships and urban locations

Community Services

  • Continue Live at Home with charitable income, external funding and some charges
  • Expand on a small scale through grants to communities
  • Replicate dementia home care services and dementia day care and resource centres
  • Develop pilot home care services utilising technology

Other Services

  • Explore opportunities to develop retirement communities in partnership with developers
  • Promote MHA management services
  • Explore opportunities to serve older people in other countries

MHA Finance in 2013

We will continue our professional services for older people which are caring, Christian-based and financially sustainable.  We forecast an income in 2013, which will enable us to maintain our existing services and develop new ones as follows:

  • Care Homes (Residential, Nursing and Dementia) - £120m
  • Housing Sales - £9.8m
  • Housing Operations - £13.4m
  • MHA contribution to Live at Home – (£1.2m)
  • Charitable Income - £5.3m
  • Income - £147m
  • Surplus to provide quality service, value for money and meet financial obligations 
  • Growth managed to ensure stability and limit risk
  • Total loans forecast to be £101m


Our Strategy

Continue the provision of more quality services for older people in need, developing a range of care, housing and support into the future.
