Officially opened in June 1997, and built in conjunction with the adjacent Mayfields Care Home, The Hawthorns is a Sheltered Housing Scheme made up of 41 flats – seven of them designed for couples. The Scheme has extensive gardens, which some tenants help to maintain, and a large communal lounge that is well-used.
The Hawthorns, writes its manager, “has a very vibrant and relaxed atmosphere” – which becomes evident when one realises how much goes on in the Scheme. The tenants have a Committee that organises all the Scheme’s activities and outings. It sits down at the beginning of the year and plans and discusses the events for the year. In 2007, two cheese and wine evenings were on the calendar, a hotpot supper and two afternoon tea dances. Outings included trips to the Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall in Wales, the Wirral Peninsula, and to the Market Day in Frodsham – not forgetting an afternoon out to the local tea rooms. Closer to home, weekly activities include bingo on Thursday and Saturday nights and indoor bowls on Thursday mornings, while a hairdresser is present in the Scheme’s salon every Thursday morning. And to round the year off, the committee also organises a Christmas Dinner, which most tenants and members of staff attend.
