Hinton Court, Guisborough, Cleveland

Hinton Court was built in 1988 with significant financial support from the Hinton family. Founder of the Hinton family grocery empire in the 1880s, Mr Amos Hinton was the town mayor. The family established a centenary fund to benefit older people in Teesside.

With its 33 flats over three storeys, the Scheme continues to be improved, with many of the projects still funded by the Hintons. Recently completed is a new kitchen at a cost of £13,000,

Hinton Court residents like to get around – though perhaps not many in quite such a spectacular fashion as 79-year-old Bill Fothergill. In 2007, he completed a death-defying 10,000-feet parachute jump for a breast cancer charity. Bill made the tandem jump from high above Shotton airfield near Peterlee in memory of his late wife Eileen, who died of the disease in 1998. In doing so, the grandfather of four reached a freefall maximum speed of 139mph and at the same time raised more than £2,000 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. “It was an overwhelming experience and it all seemed to go so fast,” he said. “I’m very glad that I have done it and if I was a bit younger, I’d have another go – it was great!” On this evidence, it would certainly seem, as another tenant puts it, that Hinton Court is “an ideal place to spend your twilight years.”
