Gowan Park, Arbroath, Angus

Opened in March 1985, Gowan Park was Originally designed to accommodate 26 residents in a mix of independent living. The Scheme was developed in the house and grounds that had belonged to a local GP, Dr Beggs. The listed main house is what one resident has called “a lovely, old world building.”

Nowadays, Gowan Park is home to 16 residents who occupy four cottages and 11 flats, three of them in the original building and eight in an adjacent annexe. The “royal burgh” of Arbroath lies seventeen miles north east along the Angus coast from Dundee. John Wesley visited the area several times and in 1772 opened for worship the distinctive octagonal Methodist Church (known locally as “the Totum Kirkie”). An important fishing port, particularly associated with a variety of smoked fish known as Arbroath Smokies, the town still offers precisely the mix of amenities and open spaces that made the establishment of a Housing Scheme such an attractive proposition in the 80s.
