Completed in 1951 and open to its first resident two years later, Moreton was originally built in 1905 for the Walton Turner family. There is a sense in which the building itself embodies Christian values – values embraced by the Moreton family and today underpinning MHA’s care of 34 older people.
George Walton was founder of the Walton’s stores in Exeter and Exmouth. The whole family was much involved in local church life. A commemorative plaque remembers the lives of George and Katherine Walton Turner together with their grandson Kenneth: “In past years God blessed the house of Moreton with much radiance. May his blessing continue to brighten the years of those who dwell here.”
Residents speak of the little things that make their lives more content – the helpfulness of the cook and the willingness of the maintenance worker, for example. They mention their gratitude for “the many and varied outings that we have enjoyed”, and one resident remarks that “there is not enough time to do all the things that I would like to do.” “I am most grateful to be able to spend the rest of my life comfortably here,” says another.
