Orchard House, Sawston, Cambridgeshire

MHA acquired Orchard House in 2001, in conjunction with Hereward Housing. Previously it had been owned by the local council, who had built the Home in the early 1970s. Shortly after the acquisition, an extension was built providing six luxury en suite rooms, bringing the total of places to 30. Fifteen of them are designated for those with mental health needs.

“The staff are very kind,” comments Mrs Betty Cutting, who has lived at Orchard House for 20 years – adding: “and the food is quite delicious.” A relative says of the home, “Staff are truly exceptional. My father has been given his dignity and a level of life quality you would find nowhere else.”

Additionally, Orchard House provides day care to approximately 20 clients every week and regards itself as very much part of the local community. One example of the reciprocal relationship is the way in which the proceeds of the local annual Sawston Fun Run were donated for improvements to the Home’s gardens and the creation of a courtyard for use by those living with dementia.
