At Cromwell House, opened in 1969, “a conscientious study has been made of old people’s comforts and habits,” it was reported. As a result, doors were fitted with lever handles, making them easier for arthritic hands to open. Similarly, taps on wash-basins were of the toggle variety, minimising the risk of a tap being left running. The en suite toilet door adjoining each bed-sitting room slid open on a ball-bearing track.
With rooms available for couples as well as individuals, “the effect psychologically is extremely good,” said Norwich architect, Mr R B Corless, who designed the Home. “It gives residents their own little home, which they can help look after and keep clean and in which they can take a real pride.”
Prior to opening it had an astonishing one thousand people on its waiting list, as it was deemed so up to date. Maintaining pride in its services, the Home has since been futher upgraded.
