MHA has provided dementia care services at Westbury since 1989 in partnership with the local Primary Care Trust and Council. The Home was MHA’s first to provide a high-quality service specifically for older people with dementia. With an emphasis on person-centred care, Westbury offers specially trained staff to build relationships and ensure the individual’s preferred way of living is continued and their identity and personality maintained. Small-group living provides a homely environment where everyday living skills can be continued, and safe access to outside areas encourages enjoyment of the gardens and fresh air.
MHA’s person-centred approach is also extended to the partners of residents. “Some relatives stay all day or come for lunch on Sunday,” writes one staff member. “Many regard Westbury as their second home and some still visit despite losing their loved one some years ago.”
Two decades on, following the development of the site, residents moved tnext door to a newly refurbished and extended care home with dementia care and nursing faciliities which has been renamed Westbury Grange. Whilst the original care home has made way for purpose-built apartments known as 'The Limes' for individuals and couples, one or both of whom need 24-hour care. In this way the person-centred care and choice that informs day to day activities is also being placed at the heart of major change and opportunity.
