Person-centred care and support for older people is enhanced by the facilities within Care Homes. A programme of updating Homes to incorporate state-of-the-art facilities and innovative features is continuous. In some cases new Homes have been built on the sites of original buildings, in others complete refurbishment within the existing shell of the building has taken place.
Such a refurbishment project was undertaken at the Ty Gwyn Care Home in South Wales and completed in December 2006. The Home was first opened as a privately owned Nursing Home in 1972.
The need for refurbishment became evident soon after MHA took over the Home in 2003 and it now offers facilities for 45 residents, including fourteen en suite rooms. Three of these are double bedrooms enabling occupation by couples.
Resident Gordon Thomas, a resident of Ty Gwyn before refurbishment, said: “The new home is very good and provides much better facilities than before.”
The new furniture, fixtures and fittings have in fact completely transformed Ty Gwyn. Each of the three floors has a lounge, dining facilities and even a spa bath, and all bedrooms have electric profiling beds offering the very latest in comfort. “The en suite bedroom has enhanced my well-being and independence,” observes another resident. “It’s like a hotel now.”
