Allesley Hall Nursing Home near Coventry. A remarkable range of activities is listed, for which volunteer support is required. Help playing chess and dominoes with individual residents while befriending, for example; or playing music or bingo in the lounge. And assistance is always required with the annual Fun Day to raise funds for residents’ activities. There are council-funded events in the summer, too, when bands play in the grounds and people from all over Coventry come to listen.
Allesley Hall opens to the public during the national Heritage Weekend when visitors can view an 18th century brick-built dovecote (once housing over 500 birds) and the garden’s rare trees – including an ancient yew reputed to be over 1,200 years old.
The present building was operated as a convalescent home in the 1940s and in 1990 was renovated and re-opened as a Nursing Home for 45 people. It was transferred to MHA in 2005. To its residents what is now important, however, is not the history of the place but the care it provides. “I have been really happy with my Dad being here,” says one relative. “He has been treated as an individual and the carers cannot do enough for him.”
Adjacent to Allesley Hall, also within the grounds of Allesley Park is Dovecotes, comprising 39 leasehold apartments. The two-bed apartments are split over two levels, and benefit from the beautiful surrounding gardens and good access to local amenities.
