Engelberg was opened in 1966 at the instigation of a local Methodist and businessman, Mr John Bates. In memory of his wife he had donated £50,000 to MHA on condition that a Home be built in or near Wolverhampton.
Engelberg had been the name of the home of John and Blanche Bates, chosen in memory of the Swiss resort where they spent their honeymoon. It was transferred to what would become MHA’s 23rd Care Home. Since then, Engelberg has been extended and refurbished to upgrade both furnishings and safety features and it now offers places to 32 residents. When John Bates opened the Home, he declared:
“This is a home for old people – a perfect home – a home that is exactly the same as a home means to you and me – a place of joy and a place of hope and happiness.”
