Queensway is unusual within MHA in providing care for those with enduring mental health needs. It has a younger client group than other MHA Homes. The emphasis here is on rehabilitation, maintaining the skills of individuals and ensuring that links within the community are maintained. Some residents attend college; others develop the skills required for budgeting
and shopping on their own. Many enjoy a variety of pastimes – one resident for example, volunteers at the local wildlife trust.
Queensway is linked by a walkway to Weston House – the older of the two Homes by a few months. Here MHA has 48 places for older people with mental health needs, 24 of which are registered for individuals living with dementia. Weston House became part of MHA in 2005 after it had been operating for 12 years.
There have been many changes over time but one senses a consistency of endeavour throughout. “We pride ourselves on looking after our residents and their loved ones,” writes one staff member. “We maintain a sense of humour along with a sense of purpose.” She adds: “One volunteer arrived some 15 years ago thinking she was at the Hospice next door. She was volunteered to join in the pantomime that was happening on the day. She remained with us since and visits twice a week, come hail, rain or shine.”
