Opened in 1975 and located in a quiet residential area on the border of Beeston and Chilwell, just south of Nottingham City Centre, Queenswood offers residential care to 41 older men and women.
Queenswood was, in fact, the first MHA Home to have an activities coordinator, as well as running a care group for people who have become depressed. Pat and Harold Dams described their move to Queenswood as a marvellous new beginning. “We spent the first two months in a mad social whirl. There always seemed to be something going on and we’ve never had so many friends… We are never forced to take part in anything, but encouraged to do so. We were alone at home but now we have companions every day.”
One resident, deaf and partially blind, had “fought tooth and nail not to go into Queenswood, as he was scared of losing his independence.” After just three weeks he was relishing his new lifestyle. “It is super and I have no worries any more. I’m really glad I came.”
Commenting on the balance of independent living and the best possible care, the Revd Herbert Austin-Fairhurst concluded: “This kind of place is a godsend.”
