Mayfields, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire

Mayfields, along with Claybourne, was the first Home specialising in dementia care purpose-built to MHA’s design.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1995 with Gerry Marsden from the 1960s Liverpool rock group, Gerry and the Pacemakers.

Garfield Weston Foundation, generous and long-term supporter of MHA, donated £500,000 to the total cost of the £2.2m Mayfields’ development.

From the outset, the Home specialised in person-centred care which was developed in partnership with the late Professor Tom Kitwood of Bradford University. Supporting residents by enabling their preferred way of life to be continued, individual needs are responded to and supported. This involves staff really getting to know each person, understanding their lives and history, interests and skills and, as a result, their behaviour and needs.

Mayfields was redeveloped in 2006. Three gardens were created in the grounds, each with a distinct character designed to stimulate reflection: Japanese, Cottage and (in line with a UK-wide MHA initiative) Sensory. In this way, the very building, as well as MHA’s specialist dementia care, mirrors and reinforces MHA’s own fundamental ethos of person centred care.
