Glen Rosa was opened in 1947. It provides 47 places for older people requiring residential or dementia care.
The George Martin Trust provided grants for the building of the Kitwood extension in 2000. This extension is home to 14 residents living with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and is named after Professor Tom Kitwood, whose work on dementia has influenced the work throughout MHA’s specialist dementia units.
Kitwood insisted that those who live with dementia need to be treated as full human beings. A sense of personhood, he believed, is what one human being is able to give another within a relationship. Kitwood’s model of care stressed the need for sensitive listening and close observation in order that those with dementia and their carers can truly communicate. It also recognises the importance of experiencing a sense of belonging and useful activity. Glen Rosa honours this approach not only in its name but in its practice too.
